31 Days of Horror Movies: How to Build an October Watchlist You Will Finish
Every October, people promise themselves a horror movie a night. Most lists die around the 9th. It is rarely the films. It is the list: too many long ones on work nights, three found footage films in a row, a Tuesday pick nobody in the house can stand. Here is how to build 31 days of horror movies you will still be watching on Halloween, and a free tool that builds the whole month for you.
1. Decide how much the house can take
This is the choice that matters most, so make it first. A month built for one person who likes the hard stuff is a different month from one built for a couch with kids on it. 2. Mix your kinds of horror
Thirty-one slashers is a dare, not a watchlist. Rotate: a ghost story, then a creature feature, then something that makes you laugh. The rule we use is simple. Never the same kind of horror three nights running.
3. Short films on work nights
A two and a half hour film on a Wednesday is how streaks end. Keep weeknights under about 110 minutes and save the long, heavy ones for Friday and Saturday. This October helps: Halloween falls on a Saturday.
4. Build toward Halloween
Start gentler than you think you need to and let the month climb. Night one should be easy to say yes to. Night 31 should be the one you have been putting off.
5. Rule out what you do not want
If nobody in your house will sit through a film from 1942, do not put one on the list and hope. In the builder you can tick only the decades you want, and nothing outside them gets in. You can also skip the films everybody has already seen.
6. Make it a ritual, not homework
Tick each night off. Rate it. Tell someone. In our version you mark a night as survived and rate the film in halos, one to five. Seven nights makes you a Novice, thirteen Devout, twenty-one a Martyr, and all 31 makes you a Saint.
